The papers were kept by the donor, Miss Gwendollyn Lendrum, secretary of the committee which prevented the house’s demolition, raised funds for its restoration, and ultimately transferred it to the National Trust for Scotland.

Scope and Contents

Robert Paul, manager of the Commercial Bank of Scotland, married Charlotte, the daughter of John Erskine of Cambus, advocate, in 1814. The connection of the Pauls with the Erskines of Alva, and later with the Erskine Murrays, remained strong, and the antiquarian interests of the Reverend Robert Paul, Free Church minister at Dollar, led him to examine many of the Erskine papers. Some of these remained with the Paul’s and now form part of the collection.

Scope and Contents A E Borthwick (1871-1955), a son of William H Borthwick of Crookston, studied art in Edinburgh and Paris from 1890 to 1896, after which he enlisted in the ranks and helped to raise the Scottish Sharpshooters, 70th company of the XVIII Battalion of the Imperial Yeomanry. He served in the Boer and First World Wars, retiring from the army in 1919 as honorary Staff Captain. As a member of the Royal Academy he specialised in portraits and subjects of a religious genre, his best-known work being...

Scope and Contents Peter Oliver served with Coke's Rifles during the Second World War until his death on active service in Burma in 1945. Included here are papers relating to his army career. Scope and Contents

John Chisholm, from Perth, studied at Edinburgh and Leipzig, and was admitted advocate in 1881. He stood unsuccessfully as a Conservative at the elections of 1885 and 1892. He took silk in 1904 and was appointed Sheriff of Roxburgh, Berwick and Selkirk in 1905. He married in 1892, and died in 1929.
